While at the 2024 HIDA Streamlining Healthcare Expo & Business Exchange that took place in Dallas recently, our team had the opportunity to meet with dozens of healthcare industry businesses who shared some of the challenges they routinely face within their industry. Epidemics of foodborne illnesses are a major public health concern. Cases of foodborne disease and contamination are red flags of improper food safety protocols or broken safety rules. These issues with food safety and noncompliance with food laws are a burden on the food industry. A food company's involvement in an incidence of foodborne illness could harm the company's reputation. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that every year, contaminated food causes 600 million cases of foodborne diseases and 420 000 deaths globally.

Ransomware is considered a major danger to the cold food chain from a digital standpoint. Businesses find it more difficult to transport goods when computer systems are locked down, and waste is more likely. The Department of Homeland Security reports that in the first half of 2023 alone, ransomware criminals extorted at least $449.1 million.

There's a good chance that soon, cybersecurity risk may increase in scope. Several of the mid-market businesses that represent the backbone of the food supply chain are growing their digital footprints for several reasons, some of which are competitive and others of which are in response to regulatory mandates. This implies that the attack surface will increase.
