VAI Cloud: The Cloud as a Strategic Innovation Platform

VAI Cloud specializes in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). Their award-winning cloud platform, VAI Cloud, is designed to run every physical part of a business, from the moment a raw material arrives at a factory to the moment a finished product is shipped to a customer. Their specialized Virtual Private Cloud environment allows for deep customization and enhanced security where it matters most, such as the pharmaceutical and food industries.

We talked to Kevin Beasley, VAI’s CIO, to understand how they are encouraging these industries to move away from viewing the cloud as simply cost-effective infrastructure. With a long history of innovation, working in partnership with heavyweights such as IBM, VAI is focusing on proactive cybersecurity and AI for data-drive decision-making.

VAI was an early mover in the cloud for ERP, wasn’t it?

“VAI recognized early that cloud technology would shape the future of ERP. In 2009, the company launched VAI Cloud, understanding that an on-premises–only model would not sustain long-term customer needs and new startups.”

Are you still seeing strong momentum? Cloud investments remain very solid.

“Yes – they are foundational to security, scalability, and cost efficiency. While some organizations were initially hesitant to move to the cloud, adoption has accelerated as businesses seek resilient, future-ready platforms.”

What industries particularly benefit from VAI’s digital infrastructure, both in terms of maximizing benefits and mitigating risk?

"Organizations utilizing VAI solutions in distributionmanufacturingretail, and food industries are increasingly dependent on digital infrastructure to manage complex supply chainsregulatory compliance requirements, and real-time operations

"At the same time, cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure and supply chain systems have grown significantly in both sophistication and frequency. Many organizations of all sizes may either lack the internal resources — or time — to build and maintain highly secure cloud environments while also modernizing their ERP systems."

Indeed: I guess the question is, why take the time and effort to build something in-house that in all likelihood won’t perform as well…

“This challenge inspired the development of VAI Cloud as an environment designed to deliver enterprise-grade security, high availability, and performance while enabling companies to run mission-critical ERP applications without the burden of managing infrastructure themselves. The goal was to provide a secure, resilient platform that allows customers to focus on running their business while maintaining confidence their data and operations are protected.”

What change in customer behavior is driving the next big development in your sector?

“VAI is consistently proactive in preparing for customers’ shifting views on cloud simply as infrastructure… to expecting a strategic innovation platform. Organizations now want cloud environments that not only host applications but also enable real–time analytics, AI-driven insights, automation, and stronger cybersecurity.”

That’s a huge change in expectation. And presumably there can’t be any trade-offs?

"There is also an existing expectation for continuous uptime and operational visibility. Businesses are no longer satisfied with basic hosting: they want integrated monitoringproactive securitydisaster recovery, and scalability built directly into the platform

"This shift is pushing cloud providers to deliver more intelligent, resilient, and integrated environments."

You’ve mentioned cyber threats more than once now. How big a risk are they

"The biggest potential risk is the rapid escalation of cyber threats targeting supply chains and operational technology environments. As more critical business functions move to cloud-based systems, those environments become attractive targets for attackers seeking to disrupt operations or access sensitive data."

What other challenges lie ahead?

"The complexity of integrating modern technologies like hybrid cloud, IoT, AI, and automation into legacy environments, which many organizations still rely on.

"Without careful modernization strategies, companies risk creating fragmented infrastructures that introduce new security vulnerabilities. Futureproofing requires a layered approach to security, infrastructure resilience, and continuous innovation."

How does VAI Cloud approach these industry issues?

"VAI Cloud is designed around a defense-in-depth security architecture, combining advanced monitoring, encryption, access controls, and proactive threat detection

"At the same time, we focus on scalable infrastructure and ongoing platform upgrades so customers can adopt emerging technologies – such as AI-driven analytics, automation, and predictive insights – without requiring major system overhauls.

"By continuously enhancing the platform and aligning it with evolving security standards and compliance frameworks, we help customers stay ahead of both technological and cybersecurity challenges."

How do you stay ahead?

"Based on VAI's industry knowledge and teaming up with IBM and industry experts, VAI Cloud was built with the latest technology and is updated on a regular scheduled basis to the latest best practices of the industry.

"VAI Cloud has real-time replicated data centers, with potentially minimal to no need for manual intervention with IT. This ensures the highest reliability from the production server to the secondary instances, with always-on real-time synchronization and byte-by-byte verification to confirm accuracy to achieve your recovery time objective and recovery point objectives.

"With the ever-increasing cybersecurity threats and seeing some existing on-premises customers fall victim to some of these threats such as ransomware, VAI Cloud, being proactive to stay ahead of this, is continuously updating its security.

"Notably recent additions of new security capabilities such as ZTNA, advanced WAF capabilities, flash drive modular level quantum-safe encryption in compliance with FIPS140-3 requirements, and ransomware detection and response at the storage and backup vault level."

ZTNA – ‘Zero Trust Network Access’ – this kind of post-firewall, ‘assume a breach’ approach is clearly becoming the ‘new normal’. How will things look in five years?

"Security will shift from reactive protection to continuous, AI-assisted threat detection and automated response, allowing organizations to identify and mitigate risks in real time.

"Within five years, the cloud will be fully integrated into operational decision-making, not just IT infrastructure. ERP platforms running in the cloud will be tightly connected with AI, predictive analytics, and real-time supply chain data.

"Businesses will expect cloud platforms to deliver not only scalability and uptime but also strategic insights that help them operate more efficiently."

Traditionally, cloud success has often been measured by uptime and cost savings. How might this change over the next decade?

"Over the next decade, success will be defined by resilienceintelligence, and adaptability.

"Organizations will evaluate cloud platforms based on how effectively they support innovation, strengthen cybersecurity, and enable data-driven decision making.

"Quality will also include the ability to maintain operational continuity during disruptions, protect sensitive data, and integrate seamlessly with emerging technologies as a competitive advantage."

You have a specific vantage point here, as a Virtual Private Cloud. Allowing customers to have their own ‘private room’ must be hugely advantageous for them.

"While many conversations about cloud focus primarily on hyperscale infrastructure, the future of enterprise cloud will likely be shaped by specialized industry-focused cloud platforms.

"Organizations in highly regulated or operationally complex industries, such as food distribution, manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals, often require environments designed specifically for their workflows, compliance requirements, and data protection needs. As a result, industry-specific cloud ecosystems may become just as important as large, generalized platforms."

Anything else to add?

"One of the most important developments shaping the market is the convergence of cloud, AI, cybersecurity, and ERP platforms. Businesses are increasingly looking for partners who understand how these technologies work together to drive operational transformation.

"Cloud providers that can combine infrastructure expertise with deep industry knowledge will play a key role in helping organizations modernize while maintaining security, regulatory compliance, and operational stability."

And you have a strong partnership with IBM, of course, so users can talk to their data like it’s a person.

"Enhancing its cloud strategy, VAI has partnered with IBM, a longtime collaborator, to embed artificial intelligence into VAI Cloud using the S2K ERP Suite.

"Leveraging IBM Watsonx™ BI Assistant, and other AI technologies, VAI delivers advanced analytics through natural-language interaction, allowing users to ask questions and receive contextual, real-time insights.

"With capabilities such as semantic automation and reasoning, watsonx BI Assistant identifies patterns, uncovers relationships, and translates data into actionable intelligence, empowering VAI ERP users to make faster, more confident decisions without requiring data scientists."
